"Do the three of you go anywhere alone?"

Came a sleepy voice from nearby. It was early in the morning - still early enough that the sun was just the softest of blushes on the eastern horizon. The trio came to a quick stop, they had not expected to come across anyone else at this hour but they weren't surprised at all by who it was.

Wapiti emerged from some shadow-drenched shrubs nearby - the rustling noise giving her away as well as the gentle glow of some rocks hanging by her neck. Her jackalope companion Nakina emerged next, a leather sack attacked to his back that was filled with something glowing vibrant shades of green and yellow. He seemed annoyed by the interruption to whatever they had been up to - thumping one large foot against the ground as he came to a stop - but that was the only protest out of him. He'd happily follow Wapiti anywhere, even to chat to some noisy youths instead of heading right back to their beds.

"Oh Wapiti!!" Kalianah exclaimed. "You're so funny. Why, just the other day Zeg went for a walk by himself! And now, what happened was, I just got this sudden feeling that I needed to go for a walk! Do you ever feel like that? It's very annoying. Anyway. Of COURSE Zeg and Zo needed to come with me!"

"She woke us up trying to leave our sleeping spot." Zohariel commented, rolling her eyes with a warm smile. "Stomping around  like a Plains in breeding season."

"Funny, Nakina is often sulking because Kali here can move more quietly through a forest than he can..." Wapiti grinned at the white mare who just shrugged innocently. She had been taking extra care to make a lot of noise as she woke up.

"I wanted my friends with me!" She explained, knowing full well that they were only teasing her. If Zeg and Zo hadn't wanted to come with her, they would have pretended to be asleep as she left.

"Why are you awake, Mama Titi?" Zegarnald's deep voice didn't really interrupt Kalianah, but it came close to it. He knew very well how chatty the forest mare could get if she was left unchallenged.

The arctic mare turned her head to the young stallion with an appreciative smile (for she too knew how Kali was!). "These mushroom's on Nakina's back only glow just before sunrise and it is at that time that their properties are most effective. Now that they've been harvested, they'll retain their glow and properties so I can put them to use. Perhaps even make some lanterns out of the less-useful parts!" As she spoke, Nakina twisted around to wiggle out one of the mushrooms - a great, fat, golden-yellow one - so he could show the trio of youngsters what Wapiti was talking about.

"How wonderful!" Zohariel exclaimed, stepping forward and lowering her head a little - absolutely fascinated by this mushroom that shared a colour with her own horns and eyes!

"They're beautiful!" Zegarnald offered at the same time, his dark eyes shining with the golden light.

After another moment spent in admiration, Wapiti nodded her head and Nakina placed the mushroom carefully back into his pouch. The mare grinned at the trio, who looked a little disappointed at the absence of the golden light. "Now, you were on your way somewhere when I interrupted and I won't keep you any longer." She shifted in the direction of the home she shared with her wife, eager to get back to sleep. "But good luck with whatever finds you! I will tell Velutina to come help you, she is good to have by your side while on a quest."

Not a single one of the youths knew who Velutina was - but Wapiti was always trailed by all sort of creatures so it had to be one of them.

They bid the arctic mare goodbue and continued on their way. Kalianah had a bounce to her steps that carried her a stride ahead of her friends. Not too much faster than the easier gaits they chose but just a little faster. They were here to follow her lead, though, so they did not mind.

"Do you think Wapiti was right about us being on a quest?" Kalianah asked suddenly, stopping her movement altogether and turning so she forced her friends to do the same.

"Maybe!" Zohariel mused. "A quest would be wonderful, don't you think?'

"A quest for what though?" Kalianah's voice clearly displayed her frown that would have been invisible in the darkness otherwise.

"I guess that's what we're out here to find out!" Zegarnald encouraged. "I feel like quests, the good type of quests anyway, don't just fall out of the sky... but there had to have been something that got you out of your sleep this morning. We just need to find out what it was."

The trio often took their naps together, ever since they were yearlings and they met up. Now they were about three years old, fresh and new into the ways of adulthood, but the habit never died. Zegarnald, a tall draft stallion, was always in the middle of the two smaller mares in their arrangement and he had woken up immediately after he felt the warmth of Kalianah's body leave his side. Her absence had alarmed him and, strangely, disappointed him. He had not given much thought to how comforting it was to have the mares with him...

But now there was Kalianah dancing off again down their path, seemingly encouraged by his answer, and the troop continued on.

Throughout the day they travelled, taking their time and allowing themselves to get distracted by all manner of things on their way. It was the journey for them that was exciting, after all, since they did not have a for-sure destination. For example, it being early into spring, they had a lively debate about whether the water in a pond they crossed was too cold to swim in.

Kalianah, the one who really wanted to swim, was excited to check it out and she was back on dry land before the pond water had cleared her hooves.

DEFINITELY too cold!!

The sun was setting again when the trio of friends decided to pause for the night. They needed the rest after their long day and it seemed like no adventure (no big adventure anyway) would find them that day.

Snowpuff, Kalianah's sweet little bunny companion, thumped a foot against Zegarnald's back until he lowered himself to the ground so she could hop down. She had been sleeping on the draft's back the entire day - nesting happily among his withers and his shoulder manes. His easy gait was much nicer to sleep through than Kalianah's bouncy trot!

Now she would catch up on the grooming and eating she had missed out during the last stretch of movement.

Everyone ate a lush dinner of meadowgrass before settling in to sleep. They stood in the usual arrangement - Zohariel, Zegarnald, and Kalianah - with little Snowpuff curled in the grass by Kalianah's hooves. Not once did the white mare dispair over a lack of progress - it was only the first day, after all! And she was with her dearest friends. What was there to complain about?

Perhaps, if no adventure happened tomorrow, they could go visit Claire and Jamie and young Murtagh!! It would be wonderful to see them again!

Late in the night, Kalianah woke. She did not startle, but just simply was awake - fully and completely. She looked around, spying some movement nearby. The moon was bright in the sky, a fat moon just over the half and it... it looked like there were two moons! One big and shining in the sky and a smaller, identical version floating beneath a nearby tree.

Kalianah carefully stepped away from her friends. She felt Zegarnald stir but he didn't seem to wake. Should she wake them? She wanted to... but at the same time she had this feeling that she shouldn't. They had all been exhausted by the day's travelling and games, after all, and she wasn't going far, surely.

Kalianah moved with quiet care, approaching the giant oak tree and the strange moon beneath its boughs. As she drew closer, the moon moved and she realized that the moon was between the ears of a creature!

One of the most beautiful, strangest creatures she had ever seen. Almost dog-like, but only in the most vague sense. Their coat was long and soft, swirls of so many shades of purple - Kalianah could make out that much in the light of the twin moons. The creature's tail dragged in the grass, though it was held up - that's just how long the fur on it was! And it... well, it looked as though there were some branches stuck in there. Very perfectly placed, though, and identical to the leaves of the oak they stood beneath.

"Are you Velutina?" Kalianah asked in a quiet voice. She couldn't have known the clue, of course, the way Wapiti had - that the creature's name was another thing it shared with the great oak.

Velutina nodded, blinking their bright eyes. The two lingered in silence for only a moment before the jackaluna (for that was what the creature was, though Kalianah also did not know that) turned and walked around the trunk of the tree. A glance was cast backwards towards Kalianah and the young mare followed cautiously, looking back herself towards her sleeping friends. But they had not stirred, and surely they would not be going much further. And they did not - Velutina led her into a small clearing. It was empty, save for some wildflowers that shone in the moonlight.

"What are we..."

But before Kalianah could even finish the question, her ears pricked towards the sound of hoof-falls crunching on the forest floor at the other side of the clearing. Not a fearful horse by nature, Kalianah didn't startle but felt incredibly curious. What an odd and wonderful night this was turning out to be! A moment later, a stallion entered the clearing on the other side. HIs coat was a patchwork of gold and white, his curving ram horns a brilliant blue.

"Hello!!" Kalianah called immediately, thinking that this must be who the jackaluna had brought her to meet. "I'm Kali! Are you friends with Velutina?"

A confused look passed over the stallion's face as he looked to the creature by Kalianah's side. "Um... I don't believe so?" That question seemed to have a strange effect on him, as though he had absolutely planned for the conversation to go an entirely different way and he wasn't quite sure what to do with it now.

"I, uh." After a deep breath, he seemed to regain his composure and then he started again. "I'm Regale." The name meant nothing to Kalianah, but she nodded politely and grinned. She was always delighted to meet someone new!

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Kali. Would you be interested in a quest?" As her face lit up, he chuckled quietly. "It may be a little difficult at times but there will be rewards in it for you, if you choose to accept."

Well, she had been hoping to find a quest but she had not thought about how there might be rewards in it!

"Oh! That would be so excited!!!" She exclaimed, practically dancing on the spot. "Don't you think that sounds wonderful, Velutina?" The silent jackaluna nodded, though Kalianah already knew it was wonderful and she did not really need confirmation Though she was happy to have it all the same. She just hoped this wasn't some sort of dream! "I would be delighted to do some quests for you, sir! Just tell me what I need to do."

And she tried her very best to listen to the instructions given, even though all she could think of was getting back to her friends and tell them all that had just happened!
